Sawasdee! Welcome to Chanthaburi!
สวัสดี! ยินดีต้อนรับสู่จันทบุรี!
This sleepy coastal outpost on the spice route between Bangkok and China evolved into the biggest durian producing province in the whole world. If you’ve ever tasted frozen durian in your home country, it’s likely it was grown here.
The Durian Industry was a natural development for a corner of Thailand that has always stayed quietly industrious. Beginning in the 1790’s with Vietnamese Christians fleeing persecution, then Chinese fleeing the White Rebellion, people trickled into Chanthaburi looking for a peaceful refuge to settle down and be prosperous.
It’s a place where almost everyone has 100-year-old mangosteen trees in their backyards, where people from other parts of Thailand travel to taste grandma’s recipes and see ancient relics, and where you can find a huge diversity of old durian varieties collected and cultivated by generations of careful gardeners.
But it’s also a place so successful that modern agriculture and the demands of the commercial export industry is erasing a delicious agricultural legacy.
So in Honor of the Gardeners of Chanthaburi, we are pleased to present 6 Varieties of Local Durians
This Durian Box includes *five* varieties (add Monthong for 6)
** No artificial ripening agents or other chemicals were used on these durians. These are cut-harvested at full maturity and allowed to ripen naturally for full farm flavor, the same quality as if you were eating durian on a Thai Farm**
- Chanee Koh Chang (ชะนีเกาะช้าง): Old-tree Chanee durian from the island of Koh Chang has a uniquely sticky, egg-custard texture and a beautiful whipped vanilla-nut flavor with a tinge of that island sea salt. If you’re accustomed to bitter and sloppy Chanee, give this version a try!
- Nokyib (นกหยิบ): This bright gold durian is beautiful to see and to taste! It’s dark yellow flesh is thick and bready, with a peculiar roasted-canteloupe and hazelnut flavor all its own.
- Ganyao (ก้านยาว): The classic choice of the Thai aristocracy, Ganyao is a wonderful beginner durian for those who don’t love the pungent aroma of durian but love the intensely thick creamy texture and mild sweetness of a sophisticated, rich dessert.
- Nuanthongchan: The gorgeous salmon-pink flesh of Nuanthongchan leaves little to be desired; it’s sticky and dry like Musang King with a beautiful nutty-caramel milkiness that ranks this durian among Lindsay’s all-time favorites.
- Puangmanee (พวงมณี): The most intensely sweet of this collection, Puangmanee’s orange-gold flesh makes up in Oomph what it lack in fleshiness. It’s a mouthwatering Dulce de Leche caramel of a durian that will leave you with a sweet, nutty aftertaste to savor.
- Sala Noen Wong : This sweet-sour variety of Thai snakefruit originates from farms around the Noen Wong Fort in Chanthaburi. Anyone who loved Jolly Ranchers as a child should love Noen Wong!
- Sala Sumalee: The sweeter and more commercially accepted Thai snakefruit, Sumalee also has the acrid pineapple funk of this species of snakefruit (S. wallichiana hybrids)
- *Complimentary 15g sample of Freeze Dried Durian (100% durian)
Also included:
- Tasting Instructions and recommended order to eat them
- Video Farm Tours by licensed local tour guides to take you on a virtual Durian Tour through the farms

Some of the best durian we have eaten in our lives!! Also, great customer service dealing with international shipping trouble etc. Highly recommended!
Lindsay –
Thanks Federico! We are so glad your durians arrived on time the second try.

Hello all, sorry for the delay in my review. I had some packages to send out. I have to say each time I eat durian I’m blown away by how they all have a very similar core flavor to them but the nuances and curvatures of that flavor are sometimes accented or downplayed depending on the variety. The Umali and Chanee durian arrived to me in great condition and taste. First time trying Marang as well loved it. Umali was more of a creamy vanilla custard experience whereas the flesh of chanee was more separated, juicy rather than fatty and had a more prominent fruity taste. Overall I think my favorite would have to be a hybrid of these two actually! I preferred the Umali it reminds me a lot of red prawn.

Yay!! My Thai land box arrived and it looks amazing 😃 so much durian i cant wait to try.
I can now actually try all them big name durians i have only seen on YouTube being described to me while my mouth waters lol now i can actually try them without leaving my house 👍 the tastes in this Thai box are incredible and i can see what all the durian fuss is about now. If your on the fence about durian or have had a bad first experience and have never tried any of these you really need to I could not believe some of the complex tastes i could taste were mind blowing.
Big thank you to year of the Durian offering this amazing service shipping durian around the world supporting amazing farms its pretty dam cool i feel v blessed to be part of this.
Thai box arrived frozen and box in great condition on time within the estimated time frame i was provided.
I will be ordering another box for sure : )
Enjoy your durian from these guys its a wonderful experience.

This was our first tasting box and will not be our last. Absolutely delicious!

We bought a box and it came perfect. The dried ice was gone but because everything was vacuum packed, the residual cold stayed.
My wife is the durian lover and she says everything was amazing. With the exception of the snake fruit. When she opened the bag, I believe her words was “omg, it smells like cat poo!”. But after cracking it open and trying it, she was delightfully amazed by the texture and flavor.
Overall, a great and amazing treat!

Hi Kwan,
We’re happy that the durian arrived in good shape and you enjoyed the box! That’s funny about your wife and the snakefruits, they do have an unusual aroma. I’ve never thought they smell like cat poo, but I don’t have a cat so maybe I can’t catch that!

Another wonderful box! Came super quick, and they’ve really leveled up their packaging game, the compostable insulation was so cool and the dry ice left no waste either!
All the durian was great, minus one yucky dry pod of Chanee, but it happens. I think the most novel durian for me was the Ganyao, so effing rich and custardy!
The bonus Salak was really fun, it was my first time eating it. Super bright, berry-y loquat-y experience! A few of them had fermented a bit, I imagine they’re pretty tricky to ship.
And the freeze dried durian was wild!
Love supporting you all in shipping good fruit to less fruit-fortunate areas!
Lindsay –
thank you for noticing the new insulation Josh! We are so stoked about it.

I absolutely loved this durian. This has to be my favorite box from Year of the Durian. I’ve now had several different boxes from them and these Thailand varieties are the best! Especially the Puangmanee and Monthong are my favorites!
I had some issues accesses my account and shopping cart via the iOS mobile website but Lindsay and Richard were very helpful and took time to personally put in my order and get my invoice sent. They even shipped the durian before I got the PayPal durian sent! These guys are REAL good people to deal with and the durian is just as good in quality as they are great people!
Highly recommended if you want to eat quality durian in North America!

I loved this box! We had a great tasting with some experienced durianophiles and others new to the fruit. The color-coded info cards were super helpful, and each durian varietal was delicious! The Nokyib, funnily enough, was the hands-down favorite of the tasting in our group – burnt toffee bitterness with heady rum-fruit notes. Can’t wait for Penang 🙂

So delicious!!! Highly recommended.

I absolutely LOVED this box. Now I know Nuantongchan is my second favorite durian – only durian graveolens is more exciting to me, and it stayed on my mind for a good long while after tasting.
I started with the Monthong because I’ve had it before – I was actually pretty disappointed with it – maybe it was a bad one. I’ve had one other monthong before that tasted like this. Maybe I just don’t like them tree dropped – dunno.
The other durian flavors in the box more than made up for the monthong. Again, the Nuantongchan is out of this world, and the Puangmanee was very similar and also extremely excellent. The Chanee was a different flavor – much stronger and intense than the two sweeter ones.
Really solid variety, and now I know about Nuantongchan. <3 Thank you so much for bringing these to us.

Expert packaging with ice packs kept the durian in great shape despite being sent to Hawaii. My previous 2 boxes of Philippine durian were outstanding, and I enjoyed my boxes of Thai durian so much. Worth every penny for the incomparable flavors and textures. A real treat, with every packet a little different, depending on variety and ripeness. Nuanthongchan was my favorite, followed by Monthong. I love the creamy butter custard with hints of mild coffee bitterness and skin that pops. After eating my way through 4 boxes I have managed to stash some in the freezer for some other wonderful, special- or ordinary- day. Well done! What a great service to growers and fruit lovers alike.
Lindsay –
Thank you Bev, we enjoy sending you durian so much as it reminds us of eating durian together with you on the tours. We are so happy to get you some good quality D now that we’re all stuck not traveling 🙂 🙂

Thanks for the Thai durians, they arrived still frozen, even though it was quite hot here in central Texas. Enjoyed trying them in the order you specified. The notes were quite helpful. The Puangmanee was my favorite.

I was so happy when this box showed up at my house! I always had durian in Thailand when my mom and I visited her hometown (Ubon). But we were always there at the end of the season and also only bought monthong. After getting this sampler pack, I found out that I liked all the other varieties better! I love the fact that these were tree fallen and came directly from the farms. Thank you for doing this! There is nothing like durian out there and you filled a great hole for those of us who miss it and can’t buy good durian in the US.

I loved these Thai durians. It was a pretty big deal when they arrived at our house last week. It was very hot here in AZ (maybe 110F that day), but the durian was a perfect temperature, just starting to thaw, with an ideal consistency. All four varieties were wonderful, so much so that it’s hard to pick a favorite. It’s a great experience to have perfectly selected durians delivered to your door!

Having first tried durian from my local Asian market and disliking it tremendously, I didn’t have high hopes. I wanted to give it another try because durian for some reason still intrigued me. I didn’t know there were so many different kinds! I took a shot at ordering from here and I LOVED IT! I really didn’t expect to like it that much! I quite enjoyed the soft creamy texture and how there’s an initial film on the skin before you bite into a pillow of creaminess! My favorites were the Nuanthongchan and the Puangmanee ones but I honestly enjoyed them all. What an experience to try something so different! I wish I hadn’t eaten them all already :).

Another great durian box– I ate the entire shipment the moment it arrived! Thanks for continuing to make it possible for us to try durians from different regions. It’s always neat to compare and contrast all of the different flavors.
Martin –
This was the second time I ordered a Durian sampler and like the first time (Borneo) is was absolutely fantastic. This time I managed to not eat it all in one go and put some in the fridge to enjoy for a longer time. As I tend to go for the funkier tastes if I had to pick a favourite it would be the Chanee but I really liked them all so much that that is probably meaningless. Thank you Lindsay for making the delivery to Germany possible !

HOLY MOLY! Ordering TWO Thailand boxes was definitely the best investment I’ve made during these months and months of quarantine! I’m so grateful to Lindsay and Richard for curating such a unique and tasty experience for this pregnant New Jersey native (who will certainly not be getting to Thailand anytime soon)! Both boxes arrived with frozen durian intact! And, I’m not sure what it was about this box but, I could not pick a favorite! EVERY bite was my favorite! I LOVE a good, thick, creamy durian and all varieties checked that box! I’m saving my pennies to order a third box before they sell out! Thanks agin, L & R for delivering a high quality durian tasting experience right to my doorstep!

Admittedly I was a little unsure about this form of frozen durian since buying it out of the shell in stores but my friend in Hawaii had the Borneo box and gave it rav reviews. So I gave it a shot and was pretty excited. It far exceeded my expectations and got me very happy after finishing as a solo mono meal. Highly recommend trying this to anyone reading this review.

Thanks Lindsay and Richard for allowing us to enjoy your third durian package. Yes we tried all three packages.
All three packages were great to try. For the Thailand package, we like the Puangmanee the best for its deeper taste and intensity scotch caramel flavors. The tree drop Monthong is a bit softer as expected compared to our weekly frozen Monthong in US. The flavor and aroma is definitely stronger. Since it’s a bit like eating vanila ice cream, we would have preferred to try something more exotic from Thailand. We do like the Chanee and Nuantongchan too. We can’t wait for the Taste of Malaysia Durian we hope will come soon.
Be safe and Thanks again.

Everything from the customer service to the packaging to the actual amazing quality of the durian is so incredible. We are seriously so so lucky to have durian that tastes like this available to us here. Of course I’d rather be in Thailand myself, but until then, thank goddess for Lindsay and freezers and shipping services! On this last round I ordered I loved all 4 Thai durians but the puangmanee was my absolute favorite. The descriptions were right on and I love getting to read a little bit about the farmer <3 Thank you!

Another round of delicious durians from Lindsay and Richard! I was partial to the Puangmanee for its maple and butterscotch flavors, but I also really loved the Chanee for its big, bold, funky bite. And the tree-dropped Monthong was so different (and way more delicious) than a standard Monthong – like the ones we settle for here in the U.S., that have remained dormant in the freezer section of Asian markets, sometimes for years. Each durian variety in the sampler is quite different in flavor from the next, but that’s been the case for every box that I’ve ordered (Philippines, Borneo, and now Thailand). Lindsay and Richard do an amazing job of selecting the right contrasting flavors and textures of the durians for their boxes. Indeed, their boxes are quite special! You can’t get any of these varieties in the U.S.! These Thai durians were definitely sweeter than previous offerings. The perfect after dinner dessert smorgasbord. So good.
Lindsay –
Thank you Dean! We are so happy you loved the durian 🙂 It makes going the extra mile to find tree-dropped Monthong worth it.

Did not expect another variety box to pop up so soon. After the wild flavors of the Borneo set, this was a nice return to traditional durian with a twist in the form of tree-ripened fruit. Honestly, the tree-ripened durians were the least favorite of the set with uneven textures. It may have be the luck of the draw. One segment of the Chanee was under ripe while the other lived up to all the hype. Nuantongchan and Puangmanee, on the other hand, did not disappoint. Especially Puangmanee. It had all the intensity of a prime durian and a spicy kick similar to a mild chili pepper. Shipping was extremely fast and well-packed as usual. A very good year for North American durian fans to sample so many varieties.

Waiting for when you head south across the border…….don’t go for the ‘sweet only’ varieties
Lindsay –
coming soon Philip 😉
