    • Description

Monocrops are rare on small fruit farms in the Philippines, and we’re glad about that. The fruits in this box were grown on the same farms that supplied the durians in the Davao Durian Boxes, intermixed with the durian trees.

When a single farm grows many types of plants together, this is called Intercropping.  Supporting intercropped farms as opposed to monocropped farms is one of the best ways to support biodiversity.

Comparing Intercropping and Monocropping is like comparing a 30-floor high-rise apartment to a subdivision. From the shady ground crops to the sun-kissed canopy, each level of an intercropped farm creates a unique habitat for insects, birds, bacteria, fungi, and small mammals.  The various canopy levels literally increase the surface area available for creatures to live, meaning that on the same square of land, an intercropped farm can fit 30 or more apartments instead of just one or two houses.

Intercropped farms grow many types of crops because the farm typically produces food for the family that lives there as well as a cash crop to give the family money.

In the Philippines, these farms are just 1 or 2 hectares or sometimes even smaller.  Because the family lives on the property, intercropped farms use fewer pesticides, artificial fertilizers and other chemicals.

These are all reasons why we have chosen to buy and promote more of the delicious and special fruits from the Philippines that grow right alongside our durians.

This Fruit Smoothie Box includes *six* fruits native to the Philippines

All packets are 400g of seedless fruit pulp, ready to toss in your blender to up your Nice Cream game with fruits straight from small farmers in the Philippines!

    • Marang (Artocarpus odoratissimus): Our favorite fruit in the Philippines, this jackfruit relative has white, slippery-smooth flesh, a vanilla sweetness, and an intense aroma that has it banned from airplanes and public transit too.
    • Mangosteen (G. mangostana): Everyone’s favorite sweet-sour, floral and delicately cooling partner to durian, now seedless and ready to be blended into the most epic 100% fruit sorbet.
    • Puyat Pulp (D. zibethinus): The most intensely flavored durian variety in the Philippines, now seedless and perfect for a Durian Sundae.
    • Lakatan Banana (M. acuminata): The most candy-like of the bananas, this Filipino sweetheart is the most sought-after of the banana varieties and is ready to up your Banana Nice Cream game.
    • Latundan Banana (M. acuminata x balbisiana): Lindsay’s personal favorite banana, Latundan has dense, gummy white flesh and a vanilla flavor. Blending Latundan makes smoothies thick, smooth and viscous.
    • Cardaba Banana (M. acuminata x balbisiana): Richard’s current obsession, Cardaba bananas are NOT the same as Saba bananas. They are a variety unique to the Philippines. Although often used for cooking, Cardaba bananas have an amazing fluffy, marshmallowy texture and a vanilla sweetness similar to Latundan.
    • Tableya (100% cacao): Cacao is an important understory cash crop in the Philippines, and most farms have at least some trees. Tableya is a traditional 100% cacao paste used in a chocolate drink called Tsikwate. Please imbibe with your fruits, or use the chocolate to whip up something extra tasty 😍

This is a Mail Order Durian package – you can buy durian online and it ships anywhere in the USA, Canada, & Europe 🇨🇦🇺🇸

This box is such a treat!! It arrived partially frozen – enough to be preserved but still ready to be sampled upon delivery 🙂 The three kinds of bananas were incredibly special in flavor and texture, not at all like the copious amounts of bananas I’m used to eating here in the US. I couldn’t pick a favorite!
