–The Chanthaburi World Durian Festival was cancelled this year.
So were our durian tours. And your durian munching trip to Thailand.
It’s been kind of lonely here without you.
So we are sending A Taste of Chanthaburi to you, wherever you are in the USA🇺🇸 or Canada 🇨🇦
This Sampler includes *four* varieties from Chanthaburi, Thailand
- Monthong: Like you’ve never tasted before, tree-dropped Monthong has more earth and burnt sugar flavors than when it’s tree-dropped.
- Nuantongchan: A hybrid of Monthong and Puangmanee, this durian straddles the more robust flavors of Monthong and fleshy texture with the smoothness and sweet caramel flavor of Puangmanee.
- Puangmanee: A beautiful, burnt rose gold-colored little durian that is intensely sweet and buttery.
- Chanee: Still the favorite of Grandmas and Grandpas across Thailand, Chanee is fatty and rich, with a bite that is almost medicinal.
- Tasting Instructions and recommended order to eat them
- Information about the farms and farm owners
- Video Durian Tours to take you with us to the farm (I told you we miss you)
This is a Mail Order Durian package — you can buy durian online and it ships anywhere in the USA & Canada. Please inquire for Europe.
Chanthaburi is nestled against Cambodia on the far-east side of Thailand, its ruby-studded mountains forested with mangosteens and durian orchards.
It’s a contradictory place, where greedy wild elephants still run riot through old farms growing ancient durian varieties while Durian Export Warehouses sprout like dandelions to supply the incessant desires from China.
In 2017, Thailand grew a whopping 635,031 tonnes of durian.
Chanthaburi grows the most durian of any place in the whole world. You’ve had durian from Chanthaburi, if you’ve ever eaten durian in the USA.
But here’s the thing: it’s a monoculture. Over 90% of durian grown in Chanthaburi is Monthong. These Monthong are cut up to 9-days underripe, painted with artificial ripening agent, and will never taste like what durians taste like if you could eat them here.
This is the REAL Taste of Chanthaburi – collected from small farms, ripened naturally on the tree (no Etephon), and with 4 local varieties that will give you a sense of the defining durian flavors of Thailand.
**Disclaimer: Thai Durian Is Not Bitter**
Thai durian is luxurious. It has more in common with dessert than durian from any other place, sweeter, heavier, more fleshy and with flavors like caramel, toasted coconut, vanilla yoghurt, and slightly fresher, acid notes of strawberry or raspberry.
Thai durian is not in the slightest alcoholic or in bitter.
Except for the Chanee, which is almost medicinal but still not really alcoholic.
If you are wedded to Tekka and want all your durian to taste like wine or whiskey, please wait for our next box of durian, or request a box of Chanee.
However, if you’re curious to step into the floral, sweet, confectionary world of Thai Durian, please go ahead
How We Prepped The Durian For Export
These durians were collected in the morning and taken to a processing facility in Chanthaburi, where they were opened and blast frozen to -40C. This type of freezing process does not rupture the cell walls and better preserves the durian meat’s natural shape and texture when you thaw it to eat.
They were flown to America under dry ice, and repackaged here into mail order boxes that can last up to 4 days in transit.
This is as small-farm-to-your-table-in-America as we can do. It’s definitely a team effort.
*Meet the Durian Farmers*–
On the Blog:
*No Styrofoam Packaging*
To get these durians to you still cold, we need insulated containers. This time we accidentally ordered recyclable polyurethane. We are sorry about it, and a little bit annoyed with ourselves, so please do us the favor of re-using this great insulation. You can keep it in the box and re-use it as a cooler when you go the farmers market. We promise to get biodegradable stuff next time.
*Lower Shipping Rate*
A lot of companies that let you buy durian online or other fruits n veg add a big fee for the shipping rate to make the product itself look cheaper.
We didn’t do that, so the shipping rate is actually a discounted UPS rate and is $50 or less per box no matter where you are in USA or Canada (we do ship to Hawaii too).
At this time we only have shipping set up to Durian Munchers in the US and Canada. We have shipped to Australia, Belgium, Germany and the UK before. Please inquire by sending a message to [email protected]
