  • Description

We know it’s tough to find the time to get away to Durian Land right now. There’s the kids, the job, the Covid-19, the lockdowns…

But we can send a little bite of Borneo to you!

This is A Taste of Limbang, a sampler pack with 3 incredible wild Durian Hybrids straight from the hearts of the Iban and Bisaya ladies in this unusual sliver of Malaysian Borneo. That’s right — lady durian growers! 🦸🏻

This Sampler includes three different colored *hybrids* (D. zibethinus x D. graveolens)

  • Suluk Kuning: The milder starter, with a smooth nuttiness and just a hint of an alcoholic perfume.
  • Suluk King: The famed flame-colored durian with a berry-sweet, fruity, nutty density.
  • Otak Udang Merah: Beautiful and sophisticated, the deep red to salmon pink flesh has sophisticated notes of cherry wine blended with heavy cream.

This is a Mail Order Durian package — you can buy durian online and it ships anywhere in the USA & Canada.

These durians are tree-dropped and sourced from all of the ladies pictured below and on the box: Madam Ting, Paula, Norah, Jenny and Auntie Anna.

There are Tasting Directions and an order to eat them, as well as information about Limbang, how to visit yourself someday,  and why it was so darn difficult to get these durians to you.

So close your eyes, take a bite, and imagine yourself whisked out of your living room, kitchen, bedroom (no judgment) or patio off to a hot, steamy morning under a deep blue sky, a river full of crocodiles, and Norah with her machete carefully opening these durians for your breakfast.

**Disclaimer: This is Not Musang King**

These durians DO NOT taste like Musang King, so don’t expect semi-sweet and boring.

These durians are zingy, alcoholic, wild, and very, very thick and creamy. Taking a bite is almost like licking a spoonful of peanut butter. Be ready.

These durians are hybrids of the wild D. graveolens (which gives them their intense coloration and in-your-face perfume) and D. zibethinus, which gives them their thick flesh and richer, smoother texture.

These durians were blast frozen to -40C. This type of freezing process does not rupture the cell walls and better preserves the durian meat’s natural shape and texture when you thaw it to eat.

They were flown to America under dry ice, and repackaged here into mail order boxes that can last up to 3 days in transit.

This is as Borneo-to-your-table-in-America as we can do. It’s definitely a team effort.

*No Styrofoam Packaging*

To get these durians to you still cold, we need insulated containers. We’ve decided to use biodegradable, compostable insulation foam made out of corn. Yes, it’s a little more expensive, which is reflected in the price.

*Lower Shipping Rate*

A lot of companies that let you buy durian online or other fruits n veg add a big fee for the shipping rate to make the product itself look cheaper.

We didn’t do that, so the shipping rate is actually a discounted UPS rate and is $50 or less per box no matter where you are in USA or Canada.

At this time we only have shipping set up to Durian Munchers in the US and Canada. We have shipped to Australia, Belgium and the UK before.

If you would like to know the shipping rate to your country, just send me a message to [email protected]

I would love to be informed when the next shipment gets to you and how to order 1 (or 2) ! Mahalo!

Hi Bernard. I have come to read about your nursery. I too love the exotic, sticky, creamy varieties you love and have propagated. I have a small farm in Lipa. How can I get several exotic grafted Durian plants? Do you ship through JRS? I have limited space and maybe can only plant 10 trees. Please give your recommendations of which Durian varieties from your nursery to get. Thanks, jess

I have been researching rare tropical fruit for my whole life and a few years back realized that there is a tiny place on a tiny island where all the rare durian species live. Also I don’t have a passport and travel is difficult for health reasons. So this has been such an unexpected dream come true to have such rare durian delivered. Suluk Kuning had a nutty bitter mild taste like a sweet potato with alcohol. I tried a big piece of Suluk King which is like a carrot pudding with alcohol. It can be hard to comprehend the flavors first time trying. I also had a large piece of Otak Udang Gelang which had the best texture. Almost like chocolate mousse but not super sweet. There is nothing quite like the flavor of these fruits. These are much less sweet and more vegetable and nut type flavors. Easier to eat these on a regular basis. Really good and strange. Upon first tasting I liked Suluk King best. After a few days my taste buds adjusted and i believe Otak Udang Gelang was far better. It really tastes like someone made a nut butter out of Mocambo seeds, Chocolate’s lesser known relative. Then maybe added a hint of cheddar on top. Thank you for making this really easy to taste graveolens. I would recomend that anyone who is interested try this because you probably won’t see it again or often. The price is very reasonable to have a learning experience that would be very difficult to achieve any other way. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for this detailed review! We are really glad you enjoyed tasting these unusual durians 🙂

The durians were great. First of all it is really nice that you are offering this product/service, as an addition to your fruit tours.
When I saw your durians on The Weird Fruit Explorer channel on YouTube, I jumped right on it and ordered a box.
Figured that it might be the only chance to try some of the red/orange wild durian types.
Although, one day, I hope to be able to join you on one of your durian tours.
Actually, some day, some way, I would like to have a durian farm of my own on Hawaii.
The cards were impressive; well done, great photos and information.
The “Eat #1, 2, 3” suggestion was a nice touch. I followed your instructions on the order of tasting.
The Suluk Kuning was delightful; I really enjoyed its thicker texture, at least compared to
most of the frozen Mornthong that I’d had before.
Suluk King was very interesting, probably my favorite.
Your descriptions were spot-on; peanut butter texture, bubble gum, etc.
I had the Otak Udang Galah thawed the first 2 nights, then froze it again for an hour or so before finishing it off.
That was a good suggestion, it really was like ice cream.
    Thanks again,

    David

Thank you for the review David! We love hearing about people’s impressions of different durian flavors.

  10. Lily (verified owner) – May 18, 2020

These durians are great! The Otak Udang Galah was my favorite. Before this, I’ve only had the non-sweet type of red durian. The sweet one was sooo good!

  11. Ani Stavrou (verified owner) – May 12, 2020

What an amazing experience!!! I lived in Malaysia for 4 months a few years ago, and I completely fell in love with durian! Unable to travel during coronavirus, I was delighted to still experience fantastic durian, delivered straight to our home. I was so happy to introduce durian to my family (first-timers!!).
The Otak Udang Galah was fabulous!! My mom and I both really liked it. It had a rich flavour and the colour was gorgeous as well! I also really loved Suluk Kuning, a classic durian! My hubby’s favourite was the Suluk King, sweet and mild.
The delivery is prompt and reliable, no hassles at all! Lindsay is awesome, quick responses and good communication. I love reading her blog and IG posts and I admire her dedication to bring durian to the world.

  12. TJ (verified owner) – May 11, 2020

Doesn’t get any better than this! Living in the coldest major city in the US, it is such a treat to be able to try durian straight from Borneo right here at home. All three varieties were fantastic. I’ve only had frozen monthong here, and it was nice to finally try different types of durians. Highly recommend ordering some if you are durian lover.

  13. Alvin (verified owner) – May 10, 2020

Bought this as a surprise for my wife and daughter who love durian. Since we are on ‘stay at home orders’ and can’t go anywhere, I thought this would be a little exotic adventure. The Borneo durians were great, packaged well and still cold. The taste was very good, and each one was different than the other, the texture was different than the durians we’ve had previously. This is such a great tasting set because they are very unique from one another and probably different than what most people are used to in a durian. Would recommend this in a heartbeat. Can’t wait To see if more varieties are offered.

  14. Jesse (verified owner) – May 7, 2020

The Borneo durian are untouchable in flavor!! I had the most tranquil experience tasting these durian at home. The Otak Udang Galah durian, my favorite, is like a provocative whirlwind of exotic and extravagant flavor. You could’ve said I was on a beach in Malaysia and I would’ve believed you LOL. To anyone hesitant to join the Borneo Durian experience, to you I say….. step aboard- you won’t be disappointed. Amazing, simply amazing !!!

    • [email protected] – May 10, 2020

Thank you Jesse! So glad to bring a little taste of Borneo to your Stay At Home experience 🙂 🙂

  15. Michael (verified owner) – May 2, 2020

These were amazing! Excellent quality, careful packaging, worth the money in my opinion. Ordered on a Sunday and arrived on Wednesday. Otak Udang Merah was exquisite, possibly one of the best fruits (and I have had many rare ones) I ever tried. The other 2 selections were excellent, fresh and tasty! Thank you so much for giving us a taste of Borneo in Illinois.

    • [email protected] – May 4, 2020

Thank you Michael! We are so glad you liked the durian 😀

  16. William and Jessie Yee (verified owner) – May 1, 2020

    Oh Dear…for Durian lovers!
We have to confess we buy frozen whole Monthong three times a month.
It’s the only main type of durians we get in Seattle. Now we are starting to see Musang King.
We bought the Borneo package after trying the Philippines package.
I left Borneo many years ago so I have some expectation of the taste and aroma.
We ate the Otak Udang Merah first, cleanse with salt water, then Sulung Kunning and Sulung King.
    Then we finished with Monthong.
Why? Because OUM is new to me and we wanted to try the stronger one first.
The aroma and textures brought back eating durian by roadside shack memories. The flesh is not as thick and creamy as Monthong type of durian. It’s typical of these type of durians. We didn’t know the scientific names until now thanks to Queen of Durian.
For first time durian lover; it’s definitely not the typical yellow durian you are expecting.
We like our durian thick, creamy, a little bitter and slight oniony aroma.
We like in order Kunning, King and Otak. Oh Monthong for us is eating vanilla ice cream.
The Otak taste better on the last round. We vacuum sealed and put in refrigerator for the weekend.
It is a joy and checked our bucket list.
Can’t wait to try your next package….

    William and Jessie.

  17. Leo (verified owner) – May 1, 2020

Thank you for the opportunity for us to try these exotic durian breeds! Otak Udang Galah is my favourite.

Some issues with UPS shipping but Lindsay and her team took care of it no problem.

    • [email protected] – May 4, 2020

Hi Leo, we are so glad your box arrived at last! Otak Udang is my favorite too, glad we are in the same flavor club 😀

  18. Julie (verified owner) – May 1, 2020

When I saw the Instagram post that I can get Borneo durians shipped to NYC, I had a moment of weakness and bought immediately and am I glad I did. I’ve been very intrigued with Borneo durians after following @durianwriter for over a year but never got the chance to try. The durians came with ice packs and were ready to eat when I unpacked them.

The tasting notes were spot on. I’m glad I started with the Suluk Kuning as this brought me back to the durians from Peninsular Malaysia that I’m used to. It was quite an experience tasting Suluk King and Otak Udang Merah as they were unlike any durian I’ve tasted before. My favorite was definitely the OUM; each seed I at had a slightly different taste; it definitely tasted boozy and I think I tasted tuak.

I will definitely order again soon.

    • [email protected] – May 1, 2020

Hi Julie, we are so glad that you enjoyed the durians! These ones are so unusual, but I’m with you on the Otak Udang 😀

  19. Josh Fossgreen – April 30, 2020

Awesome! This box was great. Arrived intact and cold.

The Suluk Kuning was pretty dry and not as sweet as I expected from the smell, that was my least favorite.

The Suluk King and Otak Udang Merah terrified my nose with the smell intensity, but totally sold me on the flavor. So tropical! And very weird/cool bubble gummy peanut buttery consistency, never experienced that before.

    • [email protected] – May 1, 2020

Haha the smell is kind of crazy, and it doesn’t taste exactly like durian, but something different, so we are glad you enjoyed the flavor and experience.

  20. Stephanie (verified owner) – April 29, 2020

Thank you SO much, Lindsay, for getting these lovely Borneo durians to the USA. They were SO good 🙂 <3

I've wanted to try a red flesh durian FOREVER! Now, I FINALLY have. They were all amazingly scrumptious and more than met my high expectations. SO good! I'm not sure I had a favorite among them because they were all unique and delicious in their own way, and it is difficult to make a comparison. But I loved them all.

I also ordered the Philippine durians several months back, and they were amazing as well. I do think these Borneo durians were even better than those though. Worth every penny!

  21. Vivian Lim – April 29, 2020

Can the durian shipped to Singapore? And how much is the shipping fee?

    • [email protected] – April 30, 2020

sorry! Right now we can only ship to the US and Canada. Ironic since they came from Malaysia, right?

  22. Rande – April 28, 2020

This durian sampler absolutely blew my mind. It’s my second box and I also feasted on durian fresh in Malaysia last Summer but I was particularly in love with these textures and flavors. A couple of them have a cake-like quality, unlike anything I’ve ever had before. This box is a true indulgence!

  23. Don (verified owner) – April 25, 2020

A rare treat. These are a huge departure from traditional durian such as those from the previous Philippines variety box and especially the common Monthong or Musang King. Something for those who want to the know how far the spectrum of flavors stretches in the world of durians. Suluk Kuning reminded me of canistel or kabocha squash with its dry pastiness. Suluk King was eggnog mixed with mango sherbert and caramelized onion. As for Otak Udang Merah, it was pure peanut butter in texture and flavor. So dense and rich, it was hard to finish in one sitting for all the right reasons.

I’m very glad to see the variety packages didn’t stop with just one. The packaging and shipping continues to be top-notch. Now I’m excited to see what’s next. Keep up the good work!

  24. Doug Z – April 23, 2020

What an amazing experience to be able to eat fresh Borneo durian in the United States! How many people can say that they have ever done that!? Thank you for providing these durian hook-ups! I can’t wait for the next one. 🙂

    • [email protected] – April 24, 2020

Hi Doug! We are so happy you enjoyed the experience!

  25. Rockyhudsonjr – April 21, 2020

Epic Durian! Trust me I know

  26. Tracie (verified owner) – April 20, 2020

Whoa! What a service! I’m not sure that I’ll ever make it out to durian land to try multiple varieties of this awesome fruit in person so, I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to have a tasting in my own home!

I’ve purchased a tasting box from the Philippines and Borneo. Both boxes were well packed with 2lbs of quality, tree dropped durian. The explanation cards add a lot to the tasting experience!

Lindsay and her team do a great job to ensure we receive a quality product! If you love durian and/or new experiences I highly recommend treating yourself with their latest tasting box offering!

  27. Amanda (verified owner) – April 18, 2020

Those durians were epic and the most exotic beautiful durians and probably the most exotic tasting fruit I have ever experienced! Life is too short, take advantage of what life and others have to offer and share with love! <3 !

  28. Dean (verified owner) – April 18, 2020

The Borneo Durians were a real treat! The Durians were creamy with a dense texture, yet each had a unique flavor. My favorite, the Otak Udang Merah, smelled and tasted like rich, boozy peanut butter fudge. The Suluk King had an almost Starburst candy fruitiness to it. I have never had any Durian that looked or tasted quite like these Durians! Very special. I would highly recommend buying a box before they are gone. I just purchased my second box!

  29. Ling – April 17, 2020

Will you send to my home in Kuala Lumpur?

    • Lindsay – May 18, 2020

Unfortunately we can’t send this durian sampler to Malaysia, although we are encouraging durian sellers in KL area to carry these durians.

  30. Courtney Walsh – April 16, 2020

More info on how to purchase and shipping please.

  31. Micah (verified owner) – April 15, 2020

Thanks for offering this magical treasure of Borneo!!!
    Oh so tasty!
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed these durios. We want more!
Hopefully in the future you’ll offer other relatives of durio that the world should know about.
    Mahalo!

  32. Sophia (verified owner) – April 11, 2020

Absolutely delicious! Sent me and my tastebuds right back to beautiful Borneo where I got to taste these special wild durians fresh off the trees in February <3
