It’s not all about sexy yellow. Lots of durians are kind of homely. Some are ugly. This one certainly wouldn’t win any beauty contests, but something about it looked delicious to me immediately.
Peeling open the shell to see this soft wrinkly flesh was exciting. That softness could be a bad thing sure, if it meant it were old, but from the look of the stem I thought it was likely that this Kacang Hijau, or Green Bean Durian, had just fallen this morning. Not only that, but I learned from the vendor that it is a little extra disheveled because it fell so far from atop an old tree onto rocky ground. Ahhh. After that I was totally welcoming the mess.
Ugly? Maybe, but so smooth, bitter, and tasty that I was cursing in my head while I ate it.

Can you recommend the best places in Penang to eat durian, and which species do you recommend eating in Penang?
Finally, I will be in Penang on 20-23rd August, will the season still be on then?
Thanks!
Luke

Dear Luke,
How fortuitous that you will be in Penang! Yes, there will be durian, although I believe it will be fewer than now. There is an unusually late season this year, you are lucky!!
May I refer you to a few of our posts on Penang for suggestions of where to go?

There are many stalls along the road between Teluk Bahang and Balik Pulau, and quite a few there too. Keep an eye out for Rob,he's there hunting Red Prawn!
