This issue of Durian Porn is for the ladies. Get a load of that hunky Male. ๐
Some of you kinky durian freaks out there probably already know that durian
flowers are actually neither male nor female. They are hermaphroditic, having both a pistil and a stamen. So why is this delicious durian called Durian Male?
Durian Seng tells me that the Chinese gave the tree and its fruits the
name Durian Male because the tree does not produce many durians. “It does not
want to bear.” It’s a casual name, not an official one.
You won’t find it listed among the cultivars registered with the Malaysian Department of Agriculture by this name or any other. Durian Male predates most brand named durians. But more importantly, it rivals their quality. If it didn’t, I wouldn’t have been served one at the legendary Bao Sheng Durian Farm.
This particular Durian Male came from a 70 year old tree grown from seed. That’s right, all this fuss about a kampung durian! But you’d never know that if you tasted it. You might think it was
a top shelf branded durian. I think it compares well to the D-604.
Mine was wet, very fleshy, and nicely bitter. Just the way I like ’em. Definitely tasty enough to keep around for 70 years – and hopefully a whole lot longer.
